Economic dynamism in Europe

The European Union, the region's main entity, is the world's second largest economy.

Europe is the third most populous region in the world after China and India, with some of the highest population densities in the world in certain areas of the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy.

The countries that have all or part of their territory on the European continent or are culturally attached to Europe are 51:

  • 44 countries have all their territory in Europe: Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Northern Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the Vatican ;
  • 5 countries are partly in Europe and partly in Asia: Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkey;
  • 2 countries are culturally attached to Europe, although located in Asia: Armenia and Cyprus.

If Europe is the richest and most developed region in the world, it is not an economically homogeneous space:

  • The very prosperous Western Europe and Northern Europe contrast with some less wealthy regions of Central Europe, Eastern Europe and Southern Europe
  • A distinction can be made between the developed, low-growth countries of the former Western bloc and the less developed, but higher-growth countries of the former Eastern bloc.

All member countries trade freely with each other through the common market, and eighteen of these countries have increased their cooperation within the euro zone.

Switzerland, Norway and Iceland, three very wealthy European countries, have chosen (by referendum) not to join the EU, partly because of their economic peculiarities; Norway's economy, one of the richest in the world, benefits from large oil deposits. Switzerland's economy is based on high value-added products, and France has free trade agreements with Switzerland. Iceland's economy is also special for fishing (the country recently decided to reconsider its position in favor of future membership).

Europe's prosperous microstates (Monaco, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Vatican) and Andorra are also not members, but have close ties to the EU.
